I got a box of crocheted pieces for $3 at a yard sale, and included in the brightly colored doilies and other items was a blue table runner with butterflies and flowers worked into it.

Crocheted garments are popular right now, so I thought I'd take a swing at converting the runner into a shrug.  I folded the top corner at each end down, as in the photo below:

Next step was to sew where the folded corner met the bottom of the runner.  I sewed about two inches along the bottom and side edges, just enough to create a sleeve of sorts.  Because the runner has a lot of filet crochet, I hand sewed instead of using my sewing machine.  It's very important to use thread that matches the runner because with this kind of openwork, you can't just sew a straight line.  You have to work through the stitching the best way you can:

After doing the same on the other side, I tried on my new shrug and found it to be a decent fit:

So, next time you come across an interesting old piece of crochet work, give it a longer look.  Could be it has the makings of a cool new garment.

Wow!!  Nicely done!  I never would have thought of that. There are some really pretty table runners I saw at Value Village the other day, might have to go back and pick them up.
Thanks, SaFire. :)  Glad you like the idea.
Nice thinking CircularPraise.

Nice, that's really pretty.  I have some table runners I have no idea what to do with. Thanks for the sharing :-)

I'm glad you like the idea, splynk.  If you decide to try it, post a pic. :)
