I got a box of crocheted pieces for $3 at a yard sale, and included in the brightly colored doilies and other items was a blue table runner with butterflies and flowers worked into it.
Crocheted garments are popular right now, so I thought I'd take a swing at converting the runner into a shrug. I folded the top corner at each end down, as in the photo below:
Next step was to sew where the folded corner met the bottom of the runner. I sewed about two inches along the bottom and side edges, just enough to create a sleeve of sorts. Because the runner has a lot of filet crochet, I hand sewed instead of using my sewing machine. It's very important to use thread that matches the runner because with this kind of openwork, you can't just sew a straight line. You have to work through the stitching the best way you can:
After doing the same on the other side, I tried on my new shrug and found it to be a decent fit:
So, next time you come across an interesting old piece of crochet work, give it a longer look. Could be it has the makings of a cool new garment.
